A rerelease? Huh? Apr. 14th, 2008 @ 09:17 am

I'm a subscriber to the Lefsetz letter, an emailed editorial all about the music industry. I read this yesterday, a review of the current music charts (Billboard?) and was floored by this:
----------------------------------------------

54. Simon & Garfunkel "Live 1969"

Sales this week: 13,178
Percentage change: -17%
Weeks on: 2
Cume: 29,177

The old model was based on scarcity. There were limited albums and you had to go to the show to see the act. So, nobody would license anything, they didn't want to lose control, they didn't want to be overexposed.

Released after "Bookends", this live album is multiplatinum. Today... It gets a shoulder shrug, from those even aware it's out.

Maybe you shouldn't do commercials, or endorsements, but your music? Make it all available everywhere all the time. The fans want it now. If you're lucky, you'll have a career, and they'll want it in the future.
----------------------------------------------
See, I didn't even know it was out. Did you? And isn't the fact that I don't know kind of proving his point - that the old music industry men don't know how to advertise to a modern audience?

Hello, I'm Elizabeth. I'm new to this community so I thought I'd give a little something in my first post; seven icons. It's not much, but I thought I'd share.

Thanks for the welcome. :-)
I´ll post one of my favorite videos from Simon and Garfunkel: I am a rock. I think the live version is actually more beautiful as the record. The voice harmonies are so awesome!

Paul Simon royalty dilemma Jul. 2nd, 2007 @ 11:35 am
quentinandcrisp

Dear Simon and Garfunkel fans,

Quentin and I are both big fans of the melodic musings of Simon and Garfunkel, and hope to have many long and wonderful conversations about their music on this forum.

To start with, though, we need some advice. During our concert to celebrate the summer solstice at Gavin's forest retreat, we performed Paul Simon's Me and Julio, with Quentin on the nose flute and me on the hurdy-gurdy. I can only say that the response from the crowd was rapturous.

Now we are left with a dilemma. While less-honest artists would simply shrug off the issue of royalty payments, we feel obliged to give Mr. Simon his dues. Unfortunately, we are not sure how these things work. We have written to Mr. Simon offering him $20. As of yet he has not replied.

There were 12 people there. Actually, 13 if you count Rector as a person, which Gabor certainly did for a brief and shameful period that is best forgotten. Does the size of the audience have a bearing on how much we should pay?

All advice would be most welcome.

Yours in ethical folk-pop-rock,
Quentin and Crisp
